Types of Hearing Loss

A hearing loss can be conductive or sensorineural, it depends on the part of the hearing system affected.

When the ear’s ability to conduct sound from the outside to the inner ear is affected due to complete obstruction of the ear duct or due to other reasons that partially obstruct it, we are in presence of a conductive hearing loss. If the hair cells of the inner ear are damaged and do not transmit the information to the auditory nerve, we are in presence of a sensorineural hearing loss. It is also possible to encounter problems conducting the sound to the inner ear in parallel with damaged hair cells in the inner ear, this is called a mixed hearing loss.
